Being in a new city and not knowing where we could go, we wanted a way to easily learn more about the places we were passing. We developed an Android app that allows you to point at a business or restaurant and immediately gather contextual information based on your position and where you point!
We wanted the interaction to be seamless, so we decided to leverage wearables. The final product uses a Myo's accelerometer and GPS data to determine where you are pointing and uses the Yelp API to pull up ratings for that place, allowing passerby's to more easily discover highly rated local businesses. In addition, we use the Google street view API to get images of where you point.
We initially planned to do image analysis on the street views to learn more about the area and potentially help blind people navigate.
