About the Project

Inspiration

Urban traffic congestion is a common problem that causes delays, fuel wastage, and frustration for commuters. We wanted to create a simple technology-based solution that can help identify traffic problems and provide useful real-time information about road conditions.

What We Built

Smart Traffic Management System is a web-based platform designed to monitor and report traffic conditions. Users can submit traffic problems along with their location, while the system displays traffic conditions on an interactive map.

The platform includes:

  • 🚦 Traffic status monitoring
  • πŸ“ GPS-based location detection
  • πŸ—ΊοΈ Interactive live traffic map
  • 🚨 Traffic problem and accident reporting
  • πŸ” User registration and login
  • ☁️ Firebase Firestore database for storing reports
  • πŸ“Š Traffic information and dashboard
  • πŸ€– Data-driven analysis for understanding traffic conditions

How We Built It

The project was developed as a web application using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Leaflet.js was used to create the interactive map, while Firebase Authentication and Firestore were used for user authentication and storing traffic reports.

Location information is obtained through the browser's GPS capabilities, allowing reports to be associated with a real-world location.

Challenges

One of the main challenges was connecting the frontend with Firebase and making sure that traffic reports were correctly stored in the database. Another challenge was handling GPS permissions and displaying reported locations accurately on the map.

We also worked on making the interface simple enough for users to quickly report traffic problems without complicated steps.

What We Learned

Through this project, we learned how frontend technologies can be connected with cloud services to build a functional real-world application. We also gained practical experience with Firebase Authentication, Firestore, browser geolocation, interactive maps, and JavaScript-based web development.

Future Scope

The system can be extended with machine-learning-based traffic prediction, automatic congestion detection, emergency vehicle prioritization, historical traffic analysis, and integration with additional real-time traffic data sources.

Conclusion

The Smart Traffic Management System demonstrates how web technologies, location data, cloud databases, and data analysis can be combined to create a practical platform for understanding and reporting urban traffic conditions.
