Inspiration

Today the municipal solid waste (MSW) recycling rate in the US sits at a catastrophic 35%. Day after day I see people mix garbage with recycling or simply throwing recyclables into the garbage. Perhaps if people were better informed on where to bring their waste / recycling this could get better.

What it does

Our web app takes in a user query (Ex. I want to get rid of my eWaste) + Location. Then it returns nearby zones to drop off the type of waste.

Challenges we ran into

A big problem we had on day 1 was network connection + gpu speed to run our ollama3.1. Other smaller issues we had was linking our ollama query to our frontend.

Accomplishments

I am proud to say we made our vision come to life with the utilization of AI and openstreet API. We were able to learn three new technologies and have them fuly implemented and working by submission time. Also we pride ourself with our project being ethical and sustainable by being fully open source.

OpenRecycle's Future

For the future we would want the project to be running on a distributed gpu system to make our ollama faster, thus making the user experience nicer.
