Health Risk Map Nigeria

Inspiration

Health Risk Map Nigeria was inspired by a simple but critical problem.

During medical emergencies, many Nigerians spend valuable time searching for hospitals without knowing whether they have available beds, emergency services, or long waiting times. Patients often travel from one hospital to another before receiving care.

I wanted to build a platform that helps people make informed healthcare decisions before leaving home.

⸻

What it does

Health Risk Map Nigeria is a community-powered emergency healthcare intelligence platform.

The platform helps users:

  • 🏥 Discover nearby hospitals automatically using their location.
  • 🛏️ View community-reported bed availability.
  • 🚨 Check emergency service availability.
  • ⏱️ View estimated waiting times.
  • 📍 Navigate directly to healthcare facilities.
  • 📞 Contact hospitals instantly.
  • 🌍 Explore healthcare facilities across all 36 states and the FCT.

To improve data quality, community reports require multiple independent submissions before public status changes.

Hospitals can also use a dedicated dashboard to update official emergency information such as available beds, waiting times, and emergency availability.

Community contributors earn incentives by submitting helpful reports, encouraging continuous participation.

⸻

How we built it

The platform combines web mapping technologies with healthcare-focused data.

Core technologies include HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, Leaflet.js, OpenStreetMap, REST APIs, JSON datasets, and responsive web design.

The application was designed to be lightweight and accessible across desktop and mobile devices.

⸻

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges is obtaining reliable real-time hospital operational data.

Not every healthcare facility currently provides public information about bed availability or emergency capacity. To address this, the platform introduces community-powered reporting while encouraging hospitals to participate through a simple dashboard.

Another challenge was balancing ease of reporting with data reliability, which led to implementing multiple independent reports before changing public status.

⸻

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

  • Mapped over 575 healthcare facilities across Nigeria.
  • Built automatic nearby hospital discovery.
  • Developed community-powered bed availability reporting.
  • Created a hospital dashboard for official updates.
  • Added waiting time reporting.
  • Introduced contributor incentives.
  • Designed a scalable healthcare intelligence platform focused on emergency care.

⸻

What we learned

Building healthcare technology requires more than software.

Trust, data quality, community participation, and collaboration with healthcare professionals are equally important to creating meaningful impact.
