The Problem
A small injury, burn, swelling, cut, rash, or other visible health concern can leave people with a simple but important question: “What should I do next?”
When a doctor is not immediately accessible, people often search online, ask others, or simply wait and see. The challenge is not always finding information. It is understanding the situation and deciding what action to take.
This inspired us to build Guardian Care.
Our Idea
Guardian Care is an AI-powered first-response health assistant designed to help people understand what to do when they encounter a visible health concern.
A user can capture or upload an image of an injury, burn, swelling, cut, rash, or similar concern. Guardian Care uses AI-based visual analysis to provide simple first-response guidance and places the user into one of three action paths:
- Monitor — continue observing the concern and follow basic precautions.
- Consult — consider getting professional medical advice.
- Urgent Care — seek medical attention promptly.
Guardian Care is not designed to replace doctors or provide a definitive medical diagnosis. Its purpose is to bridge the gap between noticing a health concern and getting the right help.
What Guardian Care Offers
Guardian Care combines several capabilities into one simple experience:
- Visual AI assessment for visible health concerns
- Action-oriented guidance instead of complicated medical terminology
- Nearby healthcare discovery
- Voice-based interaction
- Support for regional-language voice interaction
- A phone-first experience designed for quick use
The experience is built around one simple question:
“What should I do next?”
How We Built It
We built Guardian Care as a phone-first web application using React, Vite, Tailwind CSS, and Lucide for the frontend.
The backend uses Node.js and Express.js to handle application logic and communication with external services.
Vision-based AI is used to analyze uploaded images and generate structured first-response guidance. Location services help users discover nearby healthcare options, while voice interaction provides an additional way to interact with the system.

What We Learned
Building Guardian Care taught us that creating an AI application is not only about getting a model to generate an answer. The more important challenge is deciding how that answer should be presented and what the user should do with it.
We learned how to design AI outputs for real users, simplify complex information, handle uncertainty, combine AI with location and voice capabilities, and create safety boundaries for a health-related application.
Challenges We Faced
One of our biggest challenges was balancing usefulness with safety.
An image alone cannot always provide enough information to determine a person's condition. Images may be unclear, different conditions can look similar, and some situations require physical examination by a medical professional.
Because of this, we designed Guardian Care as a first-response and decision-support tool rather than a replacement for professional medical care. When there is uncertainty or a potentially serious concern, the experience encourages users to seek appropriate medical attention.
Another challenge was keeping the experience simple. We wanted users to understand the result quickly without being overwhelmed by medical terminology or technical AI explanations.
Why We Built It
Healthcare information is useful only when people can understand it and act on it.
Guardian Care is designed to help people move from uncertainty to an informed next step, especially when immediate access to professional guidance is difficult.
We don't want Guardian Care to replace the doctor.
We want it to help people reach the right care sooner and with more confidence.
What's Next
We want to expand Guardian Care with:
- Better visual assessment across more types of concerns
- Personalized follow-up and monitoring
- Multilingual voice-first interaction
- Telemedicine integration
- Smarter healthcare-provider discovery
- Continuous improvement through user feedback
Guardian Care is our attempt to make the first response to a health concern simpler, more accessible, and more actionable.
