Inspiration

I got the idea because I feel like there are always activities and places around you that you don’t know about. You often have to search through different websites to find them, and sometimes you miss good opportunities just because you didn’t know about them.

What it does

Findly is designed to help you find nearby activities and places like gyms, tennis courts, swimming pools, libraries and community centres. You can search, filter by category and distance, view places on a map, and save places you like. You can also change the app to different languages.

For the hackathon, I used demo data to show how the idea would work. The app is designed to eventually use real location data to provide actual places near the user.

How I built it

I built Findly using React, Tailwind CSS and Leaflet. I tried to connect the app to real location APIs using OpenStreetMap, Overpass and Nominatim, but I wasn't able to get the API integration fully working within the hackathon time limit. Instead, I used demo data to make the main features and user experience functional and show how the final idea would work.

Challenges I ran into

One of my biggest challenges was getting the location APIs working correctly. I spent time trying to connect the app to real location data, but I wasn't able to finish the integration before the deadline. I decided to use demo data instead of leaving the main features unfinished. I also had to make sure the app worked well on both phones and computers.

Accomplishments that I’m proud of

I’m proud that I was able to turn the idea into a working prototype with search, filtering, saving places and map features. Even though the real API integration wasn't completed, the demo shows how Findly could work as a real app and how it could make finding activities and places much easier.

What I learned

I learned how APIs and location data can be used to build location-based applications. I also learned that integrating APIs can take more time than expected, especially when dealing with real-world data. When I couldn't finish the API integration in time, I learned to focus on making a functional prototype that clearly demonstrates the idea instead of leaving the project incomplete.

What’s next for Findly

I want to connect Findly to real location APIs so it can find actual places around the user. I also want to add more activities and events and make it easier to find opportunities happening nearby. In the future, I would also like to improve the recommendations so Findly can suggest places and activities based on what the user likes.
