CampusLoop

Inspiration

A large campus can feel overwhelming, from finding your next classroom to figuring out what’s happening and who to connect with. We created CampusLoop to help FIU students feel more connected to both their campus and each other.

What it does

CampusLoop combines interactive 2D and 3D campus maps, class search, walking directions, events, community chat, and student-reported alerts. Our Pulse feature helps students with overlapping free time and interests organize small group meetups. A Gemini-powered assistant also helps answer campus questions.

How we built it

We built the interface with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, using Leaflet and OpenStreetMap data for mapping and Three.js for the 3D campus view. Firebase handles authentication, real-time data, and hosting, while a server-side integration connects our campus assistant to the Google Gemini API.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenges were turning campus location data into useful walking routes, keeping chats and meetup states synchronized across users, and fitting everything into a clear mobile interface. We also worked through authentication, location permissions, and safely connecting the AI assistant to campus information.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We brought navigation and community features together in one working campus experience. We’re especially proud of the interactive 3D map and Pulse’s flow from finding a group to accepting a meetup, chatting, and checking in.

What we learned

We learned how to combine mapping, real-time databases, and AI, and how much coordination matters when multiple users interact with the same data. Testing across different screen sizes and user sessions helped us catch issues that weren’t obvious when testing alone.

What's next for CampusLoop

We want to test CampusLoop with more FIU students, refine routes through on-campus testing, and make class and event information easier to keep current. We also hope to improve accessibility and expand to additional campuses.
