Inspiration

When searching for a swamphacks project, we were having trouble deciding on what to do. We knew we wanted to do something along the lines of helping students we just didnt know how. We decided to try to get some inspiration by looking at apis online and seeing what we could build from them. As a group we happened to come across an api that had college scorecards on it along with a website to filter certain basic criteria for schools. We had found the inspiration we needed in the sense that we wanted to instead of searching up a school and looking at its various statistics, reverse the process and have the student put in the criteria they want in a school first and help them find a school maybe they hadn't heard of or just find the school fit for them. We all remember the process of applying to schools being rough and many websites leaving out important information unless paying a fee. YOUniversity is the solution we longed for, and now its available to all.

What it does

YOUniversity takes an aggregated dataset of universities in the United States and allows students to find the right college for them by utilizing our parameters. They can sort by sat score, location, admission rate, and more. In addition, there is a built-in map to display the location of the universities in the dataset.

How we built it

In order to build and deploy YOUniversity, we first had to clean our dataset for the sake of efficiency. We then utilized Python and Pandas to create a dataset for the cleaned college scorecard. We then utilized Streamlit and added filters to be able to efficiently find an appropriate university. We wrote it all to a Streamlit web application and pushed all of our code to a GitHub repository. Streamlit allows us to host our project on their domain, and we utilized domain.com to use youniversity.tech as a redirect to our streamlit hosted site.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenges we ran into came with learning streamlit, as it was a new software for all of us. Most of our time was spent perusing through the documentation to find features that could improve the project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are honestly proud of it all, since this is all of our first hackathons, even being able to end with a working piece of software is amazing.

What we learned

Pyhon, Streamlit, Git, and the power of teamwork.

What's next for YOUniversity

We are looking to add more visualization features, such as graphs and plots. We are also looking to make it more interactive, with questionnaires that can match students to colleges based on related questioning. In addition, using machine learning to classify user data and predict geographic and cultural trends in relation to the college search. link
