Inspiration

Our inspiration for Womap came from the need to improve safety for women traveling alone at night. We aim to create a tool powered by artificial intelligence that offers peace of mind through safe route recommendations and nearby secure locations. Womap is designed to empower women, creating safer spaces and promoting gender equality in public environments.

We believe that every woman deserves the right to travel freely and safely—a right to equal access in public spaces without fear or restriction.

What it does

Womap is an AI-powered map that provides women with the safest routes for night travel. It offers navigation, highlights secure locations nearby, and includes features like an emergency button and discreet access to assistance through "Ask for Angela" , which connects users with supportive venues nearby. With live location sharing and emergency alert features, Womap is a trustworthy companion for women on their night journeys.

How we built it

We built Womap on Google Maps and Gemini AI to precisely identify and recommend safer routes. Our emergency support feature included secure, direct communication with emergency contacts. For the "Ask for Angela" support, we included information about participating stores within the app, allowing users to locate safe zones where they can discreetly request assistance if needed. These stores play a vital role in helping us offer real-time support for women on their journeys, fostering a safer environment in local communities.

Challenges we ran into

  • Emergency Button: Implementing a reliable and responsive emergency button required extensive testing to ensure it worked seamlessly in various situations.
  • Ask for Angela Integration: Coordinating with local businesses and ensuring they were prepared to offer safe support to users was a logistical challenge.
  • Data Privacy: Protecting user data while offering data tracking was crucial, and we make sure not sharing users' data.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have developed an app that meets a real-world need, providing women with a tool for safer night travel. By integrating the "Ask for Angela" support platform, we offer real-time, on-the-ground assistance for women. We’re also pleased to have incorporated Gemini AI to provide even more precise and accurate safe route recommendations.

What we learned

Building Womap, we learned the importance of user privacy, how to integrate AI effectively in a location-based service, and the value of community partnerships in enhancing safety features. This experience deepened our understanding of both technical development and social impact.

What's next for Womap:

  • Expand Womap’s Safe Zone Network: We aim to partner with more local businesses to increase safe zones across cities, providing users with a wider network of trusted locations.
  • Enhance AI and Accessibility: We plan to refine our AI algorithm for even more accurate safety assessments and introduce multilingual support to make Womap accessible to a global audience.
