Plot:
In this simple web chat side scrolling game take the role of a charming and adventurous cat named Whiskers, a customer of Hastings Direct insurance. Whiskers is getting ready to eat dinner in the streets of Hastings when suddenly, his fish is snatched away by a seagull! So to retrieve his dinner, Whiskers travels through through various scenic landscapes, avoiding obstacles along in the way.
Inspiration:
One of our team originally had the idea to make a simple side scrolling cat game, so when Hastings Direct wanted something to make "make web chat not suck", we thought this could be the ideal time to make this game as a little mini game whilst you wait to be connected to a worker. As we brainstormed ideas about other projects this project one kept calling to us due to it's simplistic yet entertaining style and the fact that developing this would be a new experience for all of us and a challenge we'd probably not finish but enjoy taking part in.
What it does:
As it is a side-scrolling game, players will guide Whiskers through beautifully illustrated environments, in Hastings. Using controls of "WASD", players must jump and duck to avoid the obstacles (Dogs, and barriers) spawning in, whilst trying to stay alive as long as possible to get a good score, as the game speeds up to increase difficulty.
How we built it:
This work was built in C++, mainly on Visual studio, using the SDL2 library for the most up to date and efficient gaming development on the language. Using a UML
Challenges we ran into:
There were some BIG challenges! First of all one of our team mates not knowing any SDL at all or being able to install and then one not being get SDL working on their MacBook so they coded SDL by the book hoping for no errors as they couldn't compile and run the code either to troubleshoot or check for errors... and the lack of knowledge we had using SDL in general so we followed a book as we went. Having 68 errors in the code before midnight on Saturday after first compiling our code.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
The getting the SDL code compiled and working without any errors after have 68 errors past midnight on the Sunday... Getting nice looking pixel art of a cat and a running animation of Whiskers! (It looks cute, right? ;p ) Setting up SDL, SDL_image and etc on some of our laptops/computers
What we learned:
We explored and expanded our knowledge of C++ and particularly the OOP (Object Oriented programming) aspect of the language after everyone only picking up this language for less than a month ago. Some basic Aseprite pixel art skills. How to set up the SDL libraries in C++ Visual code.
What's next for Whisker's Adventure:
If free time allows maybe we'll finish this up and host it somewhere as a little mini game as a memory of our first game as a team :)
