Inspiration

While looking through the TAMUhack categories, we saw the PIMCO challenge and thought to ourselves - "how financially literate are we?". We realized we did not really know as much as we should about this - what college student really knows what a credit score means? However, upon doing more research, we realized this was indicative of a much larger issue: 78% of Americans live between paychecks and in 2022 alone, they lost $436 billion to financial illiteracy. In the current economic state of the country, as savings dry up and interest rates go up, many simply do not have the resources or time to navigate this extremely confusing topic. Good personal finance skills are more vital than ever, and we at WealthWise seek to provide the means for students like us to access this information.

What it does

WealthWise is an open, user friendly database designed to be extremely simple to navigate and pleasing on the eyes, to maximize its appeal to students like us. It offers a free Wiki, which contains information on a multitude of important topics related to personal finances. It also has free tools to monitor expenses, track credit scores, and soon much more!

How we built it

The UI/UX for the web app was designed in Figma and page elements were built in Adobe Illustrator. Node.js and the Flask web framework for Python are used to create the app backend, and the front end is built using TailwindCSS. All HTML files for the site are templated using Jinja for maximum expandability for more wiki pages and tools for users, since WealthWise is designed to always be evolving.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge we ran into was trying to build a full-stack web application in 24 hours with JavaScript and Tailwind, two tools we had never used before. Learning them and mastering them in this time was extremely insightful, and we hope to continue using them to create in the future.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're extremely proud of how our web UI turned out, as we extensively planned out our CSS classes and layout beforehand.

What we learned

The importance of maintaining a unified design and a good user experience when navigating web pages, as well as taking time to research exactly how we can make our app both timely and important for the world.

What's next for WealthWise

We hope to take our new knowledge of industry standard technologies like Tailwind and JavaScript forward, and continue our web development journeys. WealthWise is extremely expandable thanks to its design, and this means we can easily come back and add new pages later to expand it.
