Inspiration

A massive 7.39 million tonnes of solid waste was generated in Singapore in 2022, a 6% rise from the previous year. Yet, the domestic recycling rate fell to a record lowest in a decade - standing at 12%. The low recycling rates alluded to incorrect recycling due to the lack of awareness as to what items to recycle, and which channel to use to dispose of items. With current waste generation levels, the country is nowhere near her target of reducing waste in landfills by 30% by 2030 as set out by the Singapore Green Plan 2030. To tackle this issue, our team has identified three types of waste: non e-waste recyclables, e-waste recyclables, and second-hand items.

What it does

WasteWise is a web application leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision.

Users will upload a photo of the waste material to be discarded in either the “JPEG” or “PNG” format onto WasteWise. Using a Computer Vision API, the script will tag the image based on its visual characteristics, such as shape, color, and texture. Upon successful classification, WasteWise will provide users with the name of the item captured. According to the type of item captured, we will use an algorithm and API to calculate the geographical locations of the nearest suitable bins. This way, we can overcome the problem of incorrect recycling by Singaporeans and streamline the process of sorting waste by local waste-processing facilities.

Subsequently, WasteWise will utilize the Open Street Map to display the nearest bins and collection points, enhancing user interactivity and allowing them to navigate and explore other recycling and reusing options. At the same time, this contributes to an engaging and enjoyable user interface.

Together, let's revolutionize waste management with AI-powered recycling solutions through WasteWise! Join us in making a tangible difference towards a greener and more sustainable future.
