Inspiration

Our project, Visage, was born out of a shared aspiration to disrupt the conventional and often cumbersome process of acquiring well-fitting and stylish eyeglasses. Despite the abundance of technological advancements, individuals seeking eyewear are still primarily confined to physical consultations that often lack comprehensive measurements. These consultations typically involve limited frame recommendations without delving into personalized face data. We were inspired to challenge this norm by developing a free platform that offers facial biometric scanning, allowing users to receive a physical or digital card containing essential face measurements, including face shape, head measurements, and key facial dimensions. Our aim is to revolutionize the eyewear industry by utilizing machine learning and complex algorithms to collect data such as jaw, cheekbone, and forehead width, nose bridge height, eye spacing, and temple length.

What it does

Visage leverages the power of facial biometric scanning to provide users with personalized data for selecting the ideal eyeglasses. Our platform captures intricate facial measurements and employs machine learning and algorithms to determine parameters such as jaw width, forehead height, and nose bridge width. Users receive a digital or physical card that includes this vital information. The platform offers a dual-tier approach. Users can opt for a simplified method, choosing frames based on their face shape style, or they can dive deeper into a comprehensive assessment that considers all measurements to identify the most fitting, healthy, aesthetically pleasing, and comfortable eyewear. Visage aims to make this technology accessible to everyone.

How we built it

To create Visage, we embarked on a multidisciplinary journey. Although we primarily utilized React/Javascript/Python for the coding aspect, our initial stages involved constructing a functional prototype through Figma. Utilizing UX/UI design skills, we carefully delineated our problem statement and devised innovative solutions. This iterative process enabled us to outline a seamless user flow and design the necessary screens to manifest our vision.

Challenges we ran into

Developing Visage presented us with significant challenges, some of which led to valuable insights and growth. Firstly, we spent a considerable amount of time discovering the extensive scope of the project. It was essential to thoroughly understand how "Visage" could positively disrupt the status quo in the eyewear industry. While we observed horizontal growth in the field, we recognized the absence of substantial vertical disruption. This presented a challenge in terms of innovating and redefining the traditional eyewear selection process. Additionally, there was a considerable amount of busy work involved in collecting data on the ratios of face measurements that correspond to specific face shapes, which was vital for enhancing the precision of our platform.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our proudest accomplishments include successfully developing a functional prototype of Visage and refining the user experience. We've managed to create a platform that empowers users with vital facial measurements, revolutionizing the eyewear selection process. We've also established a clear path toward making personalized eyewear accessible to a broader audience, recognizing the need for vertical disruption in the eyewear industry.

What we learned

Through the development of Visage, we've gained invaluable insights into the complexities of facial biometric scanning, building simple machine learning models, and algorithm development. Moreover, our experience in UX/UI design has deepened our understanding of creating user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing digital experiences.

What's next for Visage

The future of "Visage" holds immense potential. We are committed to refining and scaling our platform, expanding its reach to more users and eyewear companies. We plan to enhance the accuracy and robustness of our biometric scanning technology, ensuring the highest level of precision. Additionally, we aim to address user concerns regarding data privacy and security by implementing state-of-the-art protection measures.

Looking forward, we envision a future where Visage evolves into a bespoke service that provides custom-made frames at an affordable price. We see the potential for innovative techniques such as 3D printing, recycling, and repurposing materials, even utilizing sustainable resources like food waste in the production process. Our ultimate goal is to make personalized eyewear a standard offering in the industry, providing an accessible, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing eyewear selection experience for individuals worldwide while embracing sustainability and affordability.
