💡 Inspiration

The core belief behind Vikkeland is simple: every dog deserves its own kingdom!

As dog owners, our daily walks can sometimes fall into repetitive routines around the same streets. We wanted to build an app that makes daily walks a fun, joyful game for both the dog and the owner — encouraging exploration, longer walks, and more time outdoors together.

🐾 What it does

Vikkeland turns dog walks into real-world territory conquest:

  • Real-world Territory Conquest: When you tap "Start Walk", the app tracks your GPS coordinates in the background. The path you loop around encloses territory that is claimed for your dog's domain.
  • Castle HQ & Outposts: Establish your dog's home Castle, and venture further away to conquer detached territories and establish outpost manors.
  • Family-Shared Dog Identity: In Vikkeland, the dog is the account. Using a friendly Dog ID and family PIN, multiple family members can log in on different devices to walk the same dog and grow the same shared kingdom together.
  • Soft, Fun Gamification: No harsh competition or fitness pressure — just playful milestones, distance tracking, and watching your dog's colorful land expand over time.

🛠️ How we built it

  • Flutter & Dart: For a buttery-smooth, cross-platform mobile UI following a clean MVN (Model-View-Notifier) architecture.
  • RevenueCat: Powers our entire in-app subscription and Pro tier system (purchases_flutter), handling monthly/annual plans, paywall display, and entitlement verification seamlessly.
  • Supabase: Cloud PostgreSQL database for dog account authentication, synchronized territory polygon storage, and family profile syncing.
  • MapTiler & FlutterMap: Renders rich, high-resolution vector maps with custom color schemes for castle markers, kingdom polygons, and active walk paths.
  • Drift (SQLite): Local-first persistence so walks and kingdom data render instantly, even without cell coverage in remote parks.

🧗 Challenges we ran into

  • Polygon Annexation & Geometric Math: Computing concave hulls, multi-point polygon mergers, and ensuring GPS jitter doesn't create invalid self-intersecting boundaries required careful geometric algorithms.
  • Background Battery & GPS Accuracy: Balancing high-accuracy location tracking needed for crisp map lines with battery conservation during hour-long dog walks.
  • Family Multi-Device Sync: Designing a unique authentication model where the dog is the central identity, allowing multiple family members to walk the dog without needing complex personal credentials.

🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Creating a truly delightful, warm aesthetic where the dog is the hero.
  • Complete integration with RevenueCat to turn daily physical walks into sustainable app monetization.
  • Successfully shipping the complete production app to Google Play during the Ship-a-thon!

🔮 What's next for Vikkeland

  • Expanding territory interactions: Kingdoms conquering, alliances with friendly neighborhood kingdoms, special terrain badges (beaches, forests, hills), degrading kingdoms.
  • iOS launch on the Apple App Store.
  • Home widgets and running notifications to start and stop walks at ease.
  • Wear OS / Apple Watch companion app to start and stop walks directly from the wrist.
