Inspiration

Vaccines are highly temperature-sensitive, and even a small deviation from the required 2–8°C cold-chain range can compromise their effectiveness. We were inspired to build VaxGuard after recognizing that conventional monitoring often focuses on detecting a temperature excursion after it happens. We wanted to explore a smarter approach that could identify risk early and enable timely intervention.

What We Built

VaxGuard is an AI-powered vaccine cold-chain monitoring system designed to continuously monitor storage conditions. It uses temperature sensors, a microcontroller, data logging, real-time alerts, and an AI-based prediction layer to identify potential temperature excursions.

The system combines:

  • Real-time temperature monitoring
  • AI-based temperature prediction
  • Early warning alerts
  • Local data logging
  • Remote monitoring and visualization
  • Active temperature regulation using a Peltier-based cooling system

Our goal is to move from reactive monitoring to predictive cold-chain protection.

What We Learned

Building VaxGuard helped us understand how hardware, embedded systems, data processing, AI, and healthcare requirements must work together. We learned that an AI model alone is not enough—the sensing accuracy, data quality, response time, power consumption, and reliability of the physical system are equally important.

How We Built It

We designed the system around continuous temperature sensing and data acquisition. Temperature readings are processed by the controller and stored for analysis. Historical temperature patterns can then be used by the AI layer to identify abnormal trends and predict potential excursions.

When the system detects a risk, it can trigger an alert and support corrective action before the temperature crosses the safe range.

Challenges

One of our biggest challenges was designing a system that could be both accurate and practical. Maintaining a stable temperature while considering power consumption, sensor response, data storage, and real-time processing required several design iterations.

We also had to think beyond simply measuring temperature: the system needed to understand temperature trends and provide useful warnings rather than just raw sensor values.

Through these challenges, VaxGuard evolved from a basic monitoring concept into a predictive, AI-assisted vaccine cold-chain protection system focused on reducing preventable vaccine wastage and protecting vaccine potency.
