Inspiration
I'm a frequent user of this bicycle service but with every use it strikes me how inefficient it is and it always takes longer than it should. The process and its interface together is what makes it such a source of irritation. And that's what we were about to change.
What we did
With the help of user tests with both frequent users and complete newbies we could pin point what it was that made the process inefficient. We rearranged the workflow with distinct images and icons to lead the user on a natural path to their goal. A path where they didn't had to wonder if they were doing it all wrong or if it was irreversible.
During our user tests it became clear that it was imported to be able to undo the choices in every step, something that wasn't possible before. We wanted the user to feel comfortable throughout the whole process.
The biggest transform the interface went through was to become touch based. A transformation that was needed and lifted the interface's usability substantially.
How we built it
With the help of paper sketches and Illustrator, mock-ups were easily made before it could be built in Adobe XD.
The color scheme is inspired from Styr&Ställs logo with different shades of blue. The darkest blue represents non interactable parts while the clear blue indicates the interactable parts, mostly icons and sometimes even text. Orange is used to highlight important information and was hence chosen for its high contrast.
What's next for Usability - Styr&Ställ by JCDecaux
The limited time we had made it possible to implement only one cycle of redesign. Obviously we have a lot of work left before the interface is ready to replace the existing one. With every user test new difficulties are revealed and the goal is to eliminate them all.
(I was in a group of four in this project and we were all more or less involved in the design)
