Inspiration

Cities are becoming smarter, but when disasters strike, responses are still reactive, fragmented, and often too late. Floods, extreme weather, fires, and pollution events continue to cause preventable damage simply because warnings don’t reach the right people at the right time.

Urban Sentinel was inspired by the question: What if cities could sense danger early, think intelligently, and act instantly to protect lives?

We wanted to build a system that acts like a digital guardian for cities, watching continuously and responding before emergencies escalate.

What it does

Urban Sentinel is an AI-powered urban early warning and response platform that predicts, detects, and manages city-level risks in real time. It actually:

  • Monitors environmental, infrastructure, and mobility data

  • Predicts risks like floods, extreme weather, fires, and pollution

  • Assigns severity levels (Low → Critical)

  • Sends location-based alerts to citizens and authorities

  • Provides live risk maps and emergency dashboards

  • Guides evacuation, traffic rerouting, and emergency response

The platform unifies prediction, alerting, and action into a single intelligent system.

How we built it

We designed Urban Sentinel as a modular, scalable architecture:

  • Data Layer: Traffic feeds, and Citizen reports

  • AI Engine: Google Gemini models for detection, time-series forecasting, and risk scoring

  • Decision Layer: Rule-based + AI-driven logic to determine alerts and actions

  • Alert System: Mobile notifications, SMS, dashboards, and public alerts

  • Visualization: Live city risk maps and command dashboards for authorities

The system is built to work in real time and remain effective even in low-connectivity scenarios.

Challenges we ran into

  • Handling real-time data streams from multiple sources

  • Designing accurate risk prediction without over-alerting users

  • Balancing citizen privacy with situational awareness

  • Creating a system that is both powerful for authorities and simple for citizens

  • Ensuring scalability from small cities to large metropolitan areas

Each challenge pushed us to simplify, optimize, and think system-first.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a unified platform combining prediction + alerts + response

  • Designed a severity-based alerting system to reduce panic and false alarms

  • Created a citizen–government connected ecosystem

  • Developed a solution aligned with sustainable smart city goals

  • Demonstrated how AI can prevent impact, not just report disasters

What we learned

  • Early warnings save more lives than fast reactions

  • AI is most powerful when combined with clear decision

  • User trust is critical in emergency systems

  • Simplicity in alerts is more important than technical complexity

  • Smart cities need resilience, not just automation

SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production

Urban Sentinel actively supports SDG 12 by promoting smarter and more responsible use of urban resources.

  • Reduces unnecessary emergency resource deployment through early risk prediction

  • Optimizes energy, water, and infrastructure usage during crises

  • Minimizes waste and damage by preventing large-scale disaster impact

  • Enables data-driven planning for sustainable urban development

  • Encourages efficient production and consumption patterns in smart cities

By preventing overreaction and enabling precision response, Urban Sentinel helps cities consume fewer resources while protecting more lives.

What's next for Urban Sentinel

  • Drone-based real-time surveillance during emergencies

  • Digital twin simulation for city-scale disaster planning

  • Blockchain-based alert integrity and audit trails

  • Deeper integration with national emergency systems

  • Expansion to predict long-term climate and infrastructure risks

Our vision is to make Urban Sentinel a standard safety layer for future cities worldwide.
