UrbanBloom – Turn Grey Spaces Green

🌱 Inspiration

During Delhi’s peak smog season, the city skyline disappeared behind toxic haze.
Breathing felt difficult, and temperatures rose due to concrete everywhere.

At the same time, I noticed countless unused rooftops, blank walls, and vacant corners.
It sparked a realization:

If each tiny unused space became green, the city could breathe again.

UrbanBloom emerged from the belief that citizens can drive climate action by transforming forgotten spaces into micro-green ecosystems.

✅ What It Does (Concept Stage)

UrbanBloom is an AI + GIS-powered platform that aims to:

  • Detect underused urban spaces via satellite & street-view imagery
  • Suggest greening solutions (vertical gardens, micro-farms, compost hubs, solar units)
  • Allow users to “claim” a location for greening
  • Connect citizens with NGOs, volunteers & local authorities
  • Track CO₂ saved, green coverage & cooling impact

UrbanBloom turns grey city spaces into green climate assets, one micro-project at a time.

🛠️ How We Built It (In Progress / Research Phase)

  • Defined the problem using Delhi air-quality data & heat-island studies
  • Researched open satellite imagery sources & GIS layers
  • Studied ML models for surface classification & space feasibility
  • Designed user flows, concept UI, and platform architecture
  • Preparing MVP for manual spot-tagging + mapping

🚧 Challenges We Ran Into / Expect

  • Accessing clean satellite + GIS datasets
  • Training AI to distinguish feasible vs. restricted areas
  • Creating a permissions workflow with civic bodies
  • Encouraging citizen participation & long-term adoption
  • Balancing accuracy, usability, and privacy

🏆 Accomplishments

  • Problem sourced from real community experience (Delhi pollution crisis)
  • Clear vision for citizen-powered environmental action
  • Solid early-stage UX, workflow, and data research
  • Mission rooted in sustainability & urban wellbeing

🎓 What We Learned

  • Climate challenges need community + technology collaboration
  • AI + geospatial tools can support smart green-city planning
  • Small citizen-led actions can scale to big impact
  • Inspiration grows from local problems and lived experience

🚀 What's Next

  • Build MVP with map + user-driven spot marking
  • Develop AI model for greening-potential detection
  • Partner with student eco-clubs & NGOs for pilot launches
  • Add gamification + rewards for participation
  • Scale across Indian metros starting with Delhi

Long-term vision:
Enable anyone to green any space. Make cities cooler, cleaner, and nature-positive — one small patch at a time.
