Inspiration

The inspiration behind “Unit” comes from the everyday financial ordeal as a Malaysian when it comes to one of our favourite activities - socialising. As with most social activities, many benefits lay in collective efforts such as sharing tasks and dividing costs, however that is easier said than done with the lack of digital payment methods that cater to an effortless group sharing process.

What it does

“Unit” aims to tackle the obstacle of seamless planning and group payments allowing a group of individuals to keep track of shared savings towards a goal e.g. travels, dinner party, and pay easily (automatically divided into individual payments or allows for QR code scan for quick transfer).

How we built it

My mentor, Ms. Angela Esmita, and I developed crucial components of this application through a several intensive discussions, namely our Mini Design Thinking Workshop which helped greatly in fleshing aspects such as the long-term goal, success metrics, risks, target demographics as well as concepts such as the Blue Ocean vs. Red Ocean strategies

Challenges we ran into

With my lack of experience in coding and time limitation, unfortunately I was not able to build a testable beta app which would be my end goal. However, with such limitations in sight, my mentor supported me and encouraged me to express my idea through my presentation skills, as my mentor and I are especially interested towards connecting the dots and forming the bigger picture through our passion for project management.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am really pleased that within the time period given, we are able to come up with a concept and wireframe for “Unit” and pitch this idea as my first ever hackathon submission. The process of creating a wireframe for the first time ever through this experience was also a fun and explorative experience that piqued my interests in UI/UX design further and I will also be able to add this project my growing portfolio in tech.

What we learned

As a mentee, I learned from my mentor to appreciate the process as I test out the strength of my pitch through this hackathon experience. Though there may be many ways one could design this app, the process of exploring has lead me to learn many new and exciting processes involved in product design, which heavily relies on the research and conceptualisation process prior to it being testable much less usable.

What's next for UNIT

For “UNIT”, the future certainly looks unpredictable but with rising trends in digital transactions and payment methods, I would only be able to predict a mushrooming of applications to navigate through the problem statement and thus the debate of blue ocean vs. red ocean strategies continue as we seek to strengthen and improve the application with every new iteration.
