Inspiration

The UK social care sector is in crisis.

Traditional staffing agencies routinely charge 50%+ commission, forcing care homes to overspend while carers remain underpaid. Families remain disconnected from daily care, and compliance is buried under paperwork instead of proactive safeguarding.

Agencies are extracting £10/hour simply for brokering shifts, while carers doing the real work struggled financially. It became clear the problem wasn’t just staffing shortages. It was about trust, logistics, compliance, and cash flow.

I set out to build an Intelligent Care Ecosystem where: • Carers keep 95% of their earnings • Compliance is automated, not manual • Safety is monitored continuously by AI

I had zero coding experience. This project exists to prove that, with modern AI tools, a domain expert can build a complex technical solution capable of fixing a broken industry.

What It Does

UK Social Care App is a full-stack AI operating system that replaces the agency model. It serves five user groups through a unified, real-time platform.

How We Built It

This project was built end-to-end using Google AI Studio and Gemini 2.5 / Gemini 3 as co-founders and lead engineers.

Frontend Architecture • React + Vite + Tailwind CSS • Mobile-first dashboards for carers • Desktop-optimised views for care managers • Responsive grids to support phones, tablets, and large admin screens

AI Core (Gemini 2.5 & 3)

Using the @google/genai SDK, Gemini powers: • Matching Logic Analyses unstructured Care Plans and Carer Bios to compute a Compatibility Score • Voice-to-Text Compliance Converts spoken care notes into structured, CQC-compliant JSON reports • Predictive Analytics Forecasts staffing shortages using historical shift data

Backend Simulation • Firebase Auth + Firestore • Real-time data syncing • Live geolocation tracking for the Live Radar feature

Challenges We Faced

1. No Technical Background

Starting from zero coding knowledge was the biggest challenge. • Gemini explained core concepts like components, state, hooks, and npm in plain English. • This transformed fear of the “blank screen” into a repeatable build process.

2. Hallucinations vs Compliance

AI output for regulatory compliance cannot be wrong. • Solved by enforcing JSON Schema validation • Ensured outputs were consistent, auditable, and predictable

3. Responsive Layout Issues

Designing dashboards that worked on both phones and large monitors caused spacing and overlap issues. • Solved using responsive grid systems (grid-cols-1 md:grid-cols-3) • Eliminated trapped whitespace and layout breakage

Accomplishments

What We Learned

Let humans focus on caring. Let AI handle logistics, compliance, and monitoring. • Prompt Engineering Is Programming Clear business logic written in natural language produces better systems than vague technical specs. • UX Is Operational Infrastructure In high-stress environments, the most important action must always be obvious.
