Inspiration
TRAVELLER began after I had already created three smaller games using Rosebud AI, but I wanted to explore how far a single AI-driven project could evolve. What started as a calm, minimalist space-exploration experiment soon grew into a layered, story-focused rogue-lite adventure driven by curiosity, iteration, and the possibilities of modern AI tools.
What it does
TRAVELLER invites players to explore procedurally generated star systems, gather resources, follow strange cosmic signals, and uncover the growing mystery surrounding The Veil System. Beyond exploration, the player can dock at the Aetheris, the game’s central mothership hub, where they:
- interact with the crew,
- pick up new quests,
- upgrade their ship, and
- decrypt the strange signals they’ve recovered.
With 10 quests already implemented, the game blends atmospheric wandering with escalating narrative stakes.
How I built it
The entire project is powered by Rosebud AI, which generated the core structure using React and Three.js. From there, I refined and modified the gameplay, directly iterating within the generated code and expanding my JavaScript knowledge along the way. For story and character development I used ChatGPT; for visual art and character concepts Midjourney, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Firefly; and for audio I combined Suno compositions with sound effects and works from talented creators on Freesound under Creative Commons 0.
Challenges I ran into
Developing alongside a constantly evolving Rosebud model brought unique challenges – tool behavior changed over time, requiring manual curation and code adjustments. Balancing multiple AI tools (for code, art, narrative, and audio) required careful coordination to keep the tone and world consistent.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
TRAVELLER grew from an experiment into a cohesive, playable experience featuring 10 quests, dynamic exploration, and a growing narrative universe. The project deepened my coding skills, sharpened my design instincts, and showcased how AI can meaningfully amplify a solo creator’s capabilities.
What I learned
This project taught me how powerful – and demanding – AI-assisted development can be. Rosebud accelerated the creation of complex systems while giving me the opportunity to deepen my coding skills through direct iteration. I also learned how to blend tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney, Suno, and Photoshop/Firefly into a unified creative process, and how important human curation is when shaping an AI-driven project.
What's next for TRAVELLER
The story of Traveller is far from over. Upcoming updates will delve deeper into The Veil, its impossible black sun, and its lurking dark presence. New features – including an expanded ship-upgrade system, additional quests, and deeper interactions aboard the Aetheris – are in active development.
TRAVELLER is only at the beginning of its journey – many stars remain uncharted.
