A local platform where people trade skills instead of paying money — for example, guitar lessons for English tutoring. It helps the community learn, connect, and support each other easily.

Inspiration

We realized that not everyone needs money to learn — sometimes, skills are the real currency. In cities like Regina, there are many people who want to learn something (guitar, English, web dev, cooking) and many who can teach something — but there’s no flexible, safe, local system to match learners and mentors directly without money involved. That is how Trade My Skill was born — a human-first learning exchange platform.

What it does

Trade My Skill is a skill-bartering platform where people can: • Offer skills they can teach • Discover people who can teach skills they want to learn • Chat and exchange knowledge locally, safely and directly • All based on geography + skill confidence + mutual compatibility

How we built it

• Laravel + Livewire 3 for fully reactive multi-step onboarding & filters
• TailwindCSS + Flux UI for a clean modern aesthetic
• Leaflet + OpenStreetMap for safe approximate geolocation (privacy protected)
• MySQL seeders with real Regina users & realistic use cases
• Real-time chat system (Messenger-style) with seen/unseen states

Challenges we ran into

• Avoiding infinite re-render loops with Livewire & maps
• Making the tree-based skill selector intuitive & modern
• Balancing location usefulness vs privacy
• Ensuring the UI scales to mobile naturally
• Designing a messenger-like chat inside the Laravel environment

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Zero monetary requirement — pure knowledge exchange
• Smooth onboarding wizard with location & skill intelligence
• Chat + Matching + Filtering all working in one integrated system

• The importance of good UX + real-world scenarios over just features

What's next for Trade My Skill

 Filter listings by distance
• Let users choose something like “within 5km / 10km / Regina city only”
• Auto-sort listings by nearest first
 Auto-detect place names
• Reverse geocoding: convert saved lat/lng → e.g. “South Albert, Regina”
• Show that instead of name it  manually
• Automatically label user location during signup (neighbourhood autofill)
 User review & credibility system
• After a chat or skill session → allow rating + written feedback
• Public user reputation score / badge (Beginner, Verified Mentor, etc.)
• Optional: “Confidence score” per skill
