In Vancouver, I was introduced to Ariolimax Morch, known as the banana slug. These little fellows lack good vision and use many receptors on their antenna-like tentacles in order to perceive the world around them. Their 2 upper tentacles perceive light and help them to detect movement. Their bottom 2 tentacles perceive touch and smell.
For the future of blind eyes (in addition to what is written above), I am also planning to do more research into visually impaired animals such as various gastropods in order to improve the methodology behind scanning space. I have started to look into scholarly articles of banana slugs for clues on the best way to help visually impaired persons to spatially map a room. Sound is already a good approach with AR, but the addition of haptics with AR (say, vibrate when a moving object is approaching or pulse when a wall is close) may be highly beneficial for the visually impaired to "feel" the space they are in.
