Inspiration
The toy aisle feels stuck. Walk through any retailer and you'll find the same formula: action figures, vehicles, playsets - merchandise that treats fans as passive consumers rather than active participants in a story.
I wanted to design something different: a collectible that embodies care. The inspiration came from two places.
First, the resurgence of solarpunk as a genre - a vision of the future that's hopeful, ecological, and human-scaled. Unlike dystopian sci-fi, solarpunk asks: what if we got it right? That optimism felt ripe for a film universe and, crucially, for merchandise that reflects those values.
Second, I thought about what makes certain objects feel alive. Terrariums. Lava lamps. Ambient lighting. These aren't "toys" in the traditional sense, but they invite attention, care, and display.
What if movie merchandise occupied that same emotional space?
The result is The Drift - an original solarpunk adventure film concept - and its signature collectible: the Tender's Companion Pod.
What it does
The Companion Pod is a palm-sized, bio-luminescent terrarium collectible. Each pod contains:
- LED-powered bioluminescence with three modes (glow, pulse, sync)
- Hand-painted silicone flora representing one of five floating city-regions
- Magnetic modular base — connect multiple pods to build expanding ecosystems
- Sustainable materials — bamboo fiber shell, bio-PET viewport, seed-paper packaging
- AR integration — scan to unlock ecosystem stats, character lore, and hidden story content
It's designed to sit on a desk or shelf, glowing softly - a piece of the film's world that lives in your space. The modular connectivity encourages collecting, while the sustainability angle aligns the product with the film's ecological themes.
How we built it
The design process followed four stages:
Ideation - Defined the emotional core (nurturing, connection) and target audience (eco-conscious collectors, 16-35). Mapped the fictional world's regions to create collectible variants.
Concept sketching — Developed the pod silhouette: organic curves inspired by seed pods and terrariums, with a transparent viewport to showcase the interior ecosystem.
3D prototyping — Built a detailed visual render showing materials, lighting effects, and modular connectivity. Specified technical requirements: LED module, battery capacity, magnet strength.
Execution planning — Produced a full cost breakdown: Unit Cost= $2.40shell + $1.20dome + $3.80electronics + $1.60flora + $0.90magnets + $1.50labor+ $1.20packaging/QC =$12.60
With a wholesale price of $17.50 and MSRP of $34.99, this yields a healthy 39% gross margin - viable for both licensed merchandise and direct-to-consumer sales.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing premium feel with accessible pricing. Early concepts included more elaborate electronics (Bluetooth speakers, app connectivity), but these pushed unit costs above $20 - too high for impulse purchases. Stripping back to core LED functionality kept the magic while hitting the price point.
Sustainability without greenwashing. It's easy to slap "eco-friendly" on packaging. Harder to spec genuinely sustainable materials that don't compromise quality. Bamboo fiber composites and bio-PET are more expensive than standard plastics, but they're essential to the product's integrity - you can't sell a solarpunk collectible wrapped in single-use plastic.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A genuinely original IP — no borrowed characters, no licensing constraints, fully realizable
Sustainable-first design that walks the talk of its source material
Modular mechanics that drive collectibility without feeling exploitative
A product that functions as décor — lowering barriers for non-traditional toy buyers
Complete production-readiness — not just a pretty render, but costed BOMs, manufacturing partners, and timeline
What we learned
Merchandise is worldbuilding. The best tie-in products don't just depict a film's world - they extend it. The Companion Pod isn't a replica of something from The Drift; it's an artifact from that world, placed in ours.
Constraints breed creativity. The sustainable materials requirement initially felt limiting, but it pushed the design toward bamboo fiber and bio-PET - materials with warmth and texture that plastic can't match.
Toys don't have to be toys. The most interesting collectibles today blur categories: desk accessories, ambient lighting, display art. The Companion Pod lives in that liminal space, and that's precisely what makes it distinctive.
What's next for "The Drift" - A Solarpunk Adventure Film
