Inspiration:
Sometimes in life you just need an extra hand, whether you’re moving a couch, outside working on your lawn, or in one of many other day to day situations where a bit of assistance would go a long way. We believe that there should be a platform where that need can be expressed and more importantly - met.
What it does:
TaskLet serves a location where a person seeking help can make a post describing the work that needs to get done, the amount they’re willing to pay, as well as a few other relevant details. Their request is then pushed to a marketplace where qualified taskees can view and respond to the request. The user seeking help can review the profiles of the taskees interested and decide if they are comfortable having that individual perform the task, if yes they can accept the request and coordinate with the taskee until the task is fulfilled.
How we built it:
We utilized a private Linux box to provide cloud based services for storing information about our users and tasks in a MongoDB. The front end was mocked up in Adobe Illustrator, and implemented in Android Studio via Java. The app communicates with the server via Retrofit, a HTTP client for Java.
Challenges we ran into:
In general, creating a polished user experience is challenging. It requires a lot of attention to the details. The time frame of the hackathon certainly didn’t help. Needless to say, we felt that we developed some solid, intuitive, experiences - with tangible goals for the future.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
We felt that we attacked this app with a focus on the bigger picture. We feel that the demand for this product is real - and that this could truly be something that would help impact society in a positive way.
We’re also proud of our work on implementing a solid backend basis. This allows for scalable growth on multiple platforms.
What we learned:
We advanced our skills with design, Android development, databases, and API requests.
