Inspiration

Our original concept was inspired by an insight from a Reply-All podcast. They reported that hotline services have become increasingly popular with seniors in long-term care after COVID hit, as they were more comfortable with using phones than other modern technologies to connect with people when they are lonely in lockdown. The design of the application was to serve the needs of residents in long-term care facilities that were being barricaded due to COVID-19 lockdown restriction. The lockdown also limited student volunteering experiences since events had been canceled that could have helped them gain hours to graduate or gain professional experience for their resume. TapCare helps connect the two though a secure and feasible application that helps residents in long term care facilities feel they are wanted. The design of the app interface is designed to be a simple tool to manage while its aesthetics are inspired by a nostalgic interface of old technology to match the mental models of our target audience: senior citizens living in long-term care.

What it does

The app connects seniors in long-term care with volunteers who apply for experience or volunteer hours. It is managed by admins, workers at their respective long-term care residences, to ensure security and prevent the seniors from being scammed; a problem that was brought to light in the podcast.

How we built it

We used Miro to collaborate on the initial flow of the application. We moved onto Figma where the wireframing and prototyping took place.

Challenges we ran into

Overall, the biggest challenge was narrowing our idea down to one strong concept, as we were not allotted a comfortable time frame to flesh out various ideas. We were required to explore as much as we could in as little time as possible, which caused some conflict. Overall we were able to find an idea that everyone was supportive of and used this concept to inspire our product.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were glad to have finished the submission in time of the deadline, as well as overcoming the challenges of collaboration and hopefully finding a solution to the design challenge.

What we learned

One of the most important things we learned from this hackathon was how to work together as a team. Everyone had their own ideas and inputs but even though they sometimes clashed with one another, we were all able to come up with a compromise that satisfied everybody. Along with teamwork, we learned more about how to protect the privacy of others. With our app, TapChat it was important that we make it safe and simple for seniors to use. Thanks to the help of our mentor, Mike Accettura, he guided us through the process and gave notes that make the app safer for our users.
