Inspiration
Living and studying in Almora helped us understand that safety is not just an idea-it directly affects freedom , mobility , confidence , and daily life for students , especially girls. In our college ,many real-life situations made us realize how limited and unsafe travel can feel for female students. for example :- The hostel administration created a separate route from the girls hostel to the college because the longer route was considered unsafe. Students often faced multiples issues while travelling through isolated areas, especially during dark hours and early mornings .instead of feeling free to move comfortably, many girls constantly had to think about safety before simply going to anywhere . Another major issue that deeply inspired this project was related to transportation. There was only one 4Am bus available from near hostel that connected students towards the GARHWAL ROUTE.This single early -morning bus was extremely important because students could travel early and safely reach their homes on time. However, due to safety concerns , eventually bus services on the route was cancelled for college students(especially girls because the bus stop has been changed). The bus that was already very difficult to get on that route was diverted to another route ,leaving students with very limited and inconvenient travel options. For many students, especially girls, this highlighted a harsh reality : 1.Mobility is restricted due to security concerns, 2.Choices for travel are restricted , and 3.Students experience restrictions on their freedom to move around freely. What we realized is that: WHEN SAFETY BECOMES A CONCERN , FREEDOM BECOMES LIMITED Student should not have to:
- avoid certain roads,
- lose transport accessibility,
- or feel restricted because of fear and unsafe environments. This inspired us to build SurakshaPath--- a safety platform designed to help women and students feel safer, more informed, more confident while travelling. our goal was not only to create a technical project ,but also to design a solution that addresses real- life challenges faced by students in hill towns and college environments. SurakshaPath aims to provide:
- safer route awareness,
- emergency accessibility, -trusted contact systems, -community safety reporting, -and quick- response safety tools so that students can move with more confidence and independence. WALK FREE. WALK SAFE ## What it does SurakshaPath is a Smart and innovative women safety app platform designed to ensure safe and comfortable travel experiences for the students and women in hill areas such as Hilly areas colleges specially females . It encompasses all safety aspects in one platform. Smart SOS system Users can use the SOS feature using a click of button in any unsafe situation. The following are the main functionalities of the system: -Live location sharing -Emergency contact alerts -Easy and quick access to emergency services -safe route Awareness . The application will be able to assist users to discover: Safer route unsafe isolated route and risky areas . This feature was inspired by actual events in our college where the girls were advised to go from separate routes due to safety concerns .Trusted Circle users can add individuals including friends , housemates, or family members to track their travel status and alert them about emergencies in unsafe situations . Fake Call Feature in case the user faces an uncomfortable and risky situation , the user can use this feature to make a fake call from** "mom", "friends", "Police" . Students can report: Dark roads ,Unsafe locations, Suspicious behaviour, Harassment-prone areas ## How we built it **SurakshaPath was developed with MERN stack with an aim to build web application that would address the safety concerns faced by women students in the hill areas such as Almora .
Technology Used- Frontend: React, Vite, Tailwind CSS, Framer Motion Backend : Node.js, Express.js Database :MongoDB Maps &Locations: React Leaflet, OpenStreetMap, Geolocation API
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that the interface looked modern while still being usable during stressful situations. For Example:
- the SOS button needed to be visually strong, 2.instantly accessible, 3.and responsive on all devices. ## Accomplishments that we're proud of We are proud of building SurakshaPath,a project inspired by real safety issues faced by students and girls in daily travel. We successfully created a modern and responsive platform focused on safer routes, emergency support , and community awareness while learning and improving our skills. _OUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT WAS TRUNING REAL -LIFE PROBLRMS INTO A PRACTICAL TECHNOLOGY SOLUTION. _ ## What we learned -Working on creating solutions to safety-related problems rather than just cloning simple projects. -Enhancing our ability to design responsive user interfaces by applying knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript in frontend development. -Gaining insight into how we can use APIS such as Geolocation and maps in safety applications. -Learning about the significance of accessibility , easy navigation , and user friendly interfaces when an emergency occurs .
- Boosting our problem solving , debugging and collaboration abilities by working within hackathon timelines. -Realizing the potential social benefit of technology that could make a difference in student and women safety in hill regions .
- Considering the user's perspective while developing features like SOS alert , trusted contact and safer route options. ## What's next for** SurakshaPath** In the future ,we plan to make SurakshaPathmore advanced and practical by adding : -real-time live tracking -AI-Powered risk detection, -voice activated SOS, -offline emergency support, -and wearable device integration We also aim to collaborate with colleges and local communities to create a safer travel environment for students, especially girls , in hills regions and remote areas.
