Inspiration:
Children's lives have been turned upside down during the current coronavirus pandemic. They have questions about the virus and may feel anxiety about the rapid change. Amazingly, however, many children also very much want to help! We were inspired by the resilience and helpfulness of children and grown-ups across the world, as we all grapple with COVID-19. There are so many heartwarming stories of people coming together and working towards a common goal. In particular, we were impressed by the story of school districts, which - in the midst of switching to virtual learning and finding new ways to care for students - gathered supplies to donate to hospitals. We aimed to write a book that captured this spirit of resourcefulness, selflessness, and community, while simultaneously providing factual information about coronavirus and normalizing the many emotions children may be feeling along the way.
What it does:
"Sudsy" follows a bubbly soap dispenser as she journeys from her normal role in a high school to the local hospital, to help keep the hands of patients and hospital staff squeaky clean during the coronavirus pandemic. Along the way, it shows her emotions as she faces the many challenges that arise due to COVID-19. The book also includes factual information about coronavirus, including preventative health measures, and tells stories of health care professionals and every day heroes working against the virus. All information presented in the story is age appropriate, and the graphics are colorful and fun.
How we built it:
We wrote the story and imagined what graphics would accompany each page. We hand-drew these images, and then recreated them using Adobe Illustrator. Finally, we compiled our graphics and text using Adobe InDesign.
Challenges we ran into:
As this was a project with two socially-distancing co-creators, it was a challenge to illustrate and create a cohesive piece of work while working separately.
Accomplishments that we are proud of:
We are most proud of writing a story that highlights the diverse everyday heroes (of all ages!) that are working together in the context of this pandemic to keep our communities safe.
What we learned:
We truly learned that not all heroes wear capes. There are so many people in our communities that make society function. Everyone is important.
Who we are:
The authors of this book, Logan and Emily, are two pediatricians-in-training. The two friends met during their undergraduate career at Duke University, where Logan studied child development and Emily studied computer science and visual arts. Both women share a mutual love for drawing and storytelling and are excited to use their skills to help children better understand and make sense of everything that is going on with COVID-19!
