Study Session

Problem:

People struggle to make connections within their majors and classes due to the online learning format. Current online learning platforms cannot replace the loss of social connection and interaction that students gain from interacting in an in-person environment.

Solution:

Build a platform to connect people with similar classes, background, and interests. By documenting a user’s classes, club interests, and other activities, a user can find others and interact with friends who have similar interests or who have taken/are taking similar classes. This application’s platform is intended to be used for academic collaboration and to build social connections.

Main Features:

Groups: A Group can be used to accommodate for anything from a particular class, club, or an interest group. Each Group will have two things: a chat window and history, and a study room.

Study Rooms: A study room is a zoom call that any member of a Group can join to interact with friends and/or classmates. It is intended to simulate the experience of reserving a study room with your friends or classmates at the library for example. A study room goes live once the first person in the Group joins the room.

A class study room will allow members of a particular class to collaborate with one another. A moderator, like a TA or an instructor, will be able to open breakout rooms in order to further personalize the experience. It is not intended for this to be used on a class section by section basis, though it can, but rather for a class by class or subject by subject basis.

A club/interest group’s study room will function much like just having a personal meeting room.

Course List: Study Session will track the courses each student is taking and has completed. In doing so, it will allow users to see which courses they are taking or have taken.

There will be an option to indicate to other users whether or not a particular user would be open to mentoring or tutoring others also taking the class

This application/service should have some tie to the Cal Poly class registration office in order to retrieve course names, set up necessary course Groups and allow the tool to function most effectively as both a study and networking tool.

Users will also be able to mark what courses they will take, as to coordinate with their friends to get into similar sections/courses.

How is it different: Study Session is different from other products in that it splits between the productivity heavy, Slack and the social media heavy Facebook, while aiding in one’s educational experience.

By allowing users to see the clubs and class activity of their friends and/or classmates, they can more easily find people with similar interests and have more incentive to reach out and connect.

Furthermore, in the classroom setting, users who may need assistance with certain classes will be able to reach out to friends who have completed those classes who have marked that they are willing to mentor. Users who have filled out their immediate future courses list will be able to find people within their network taking similar courses and be able to more easily coordinate study groups and/or enroll in similar courses.

We can also market this to be something to just ask questions to people in your class if you don’t have anyones numbers
