Team Stress Analytics and Insights for Jira

Inspiration

Employee burnout is often invisible until it becomes overwhelming. People may feel productive and energized in the short term, but over time, unchecked stress can lead to significant health issues, reduced job satisfaction, and decreased productivity. Inspired by this challenge, I created Team Stress Analytics and Insights for Jira. My goal is to provide teams and leaders with actionable insights to manage stress proactively, ensuring healthier workflows and long-term success.

What it does

The plugin integrates seamlessly with Jira to collect and analyze stress-related metrics, such as workload, deadlines, SLA compliance, and more. It visualizes this data in intuitive reports, helping individuals and leaders identify potential stress triggers. Teams can then take actionable steps, like redistributing tasks or scheduling breaks, to maintain productivity while supporting employee well-being.

How I built it

I used Atlassian Forge for secure and efficient integration with Jira, leveraging Atlaskit for UI components to create a professional and user-friendly experience. Metrics are stored and managed using a robust state management solution, ensuring scalability and performance.

The plugin includes:

  • Dynamic Metrics Visualization: Real-time insights into workload, deadlines, and more.
  • Threshold Customization: Tailored configurations for individual or team needs.
  • Stress Flags: Easy identification of high-risk periods.

Challenges I ran into

  • Data Accuracy: Ensuring metrics align with real-world workloads and deadlines required thorough testing.
  • Storage Limitations: Atlassian's storage API constraints required me to optimize how I handle and update large datasets.
  • Balancing Complexity: Creating a detailed yet simple interface to cater to different user roles (individuals vs. leaders).

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Successfully designed a solution that combines meaningful analytics with an intuitive UI.
  • Optimized the plugin to handle complex data while staying performant and scalable.
  • Implemented stress flags that allow users to act proactively to avoid burnout.

What I learned

  • The importance of proactive stress management and how metrics can support better decision-making.
  • Leveraging Atlassian's ecosystem to create powerful and meaningful tools for users.
  • Key-value storage can be leveraged creatively to handle complex datasets efficiently.

What's next for Team Stress Analytics and Insights for Jira

I plan to integrate Rovo Agent to analyze data and provide predictive insights into stress patterns, along with adding a dedicated screen for leadership to identify and address the most stressed team members proactively.
