Inspiration

Discrimination against women is a pervasive phenomenon in Indian society. Culturally ingrained preference for sons, high risk of sexual violence, and slave labor have earned India the title of the most dangerous country in the world to be a woman.

There is one dowry death every 78 hours, one act of sexual harassment every 59 min, one rape every 34 min, and 1 act of torture every 12 min. One in every three married women experiences domestic violence, yet only 2 percent of them seek help.

What it does

Our app “Stree”, which means woman in Hindi, aims to raise awareness about what it takes to be a woman in each state in India, breaking the stigma against reaching out for help, and creating a community of women who support each other.

We wanted to use our app to bring women together to break the cultural barriers and support and uplift each other.

If you click the tryout link, you will be led to a page where users can click on the state options and hit the show button to see state-wise facts on literacy, home ownership, and domestic violence for women.

If the user clicks the Rank option, then they see the best and worst states in India for women based on different criteria.

If the user clicks the Risk option, then they can access a screening tool to identify the risk of domestic abuse published by the Academy of Emergency Medicine, This enables users to overcome the cultural bias that often leads to victims perceiving extreme levels of violence in their lives as normal.

If the user clicks the Resources option, users can search for the nearest crisis help centers based on the state and district in which they live.

We also integrated a chatbot that answers questions about calling the crisis hotline, misconceptions about domestic violence, and relationship red flags to look for.

If the user clicks the community option, users can log in to a forum where they can discuss any topic and seek support. Users can create a post and reply to posts from others to offer help and resources.

How we built it

We built our app using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. We integrated with Zing Charts to map the best and worst states in India for women based on different criteria. We integrated with Leaflet and OpenStreetMap to provide the crisis center locations in different states. We also integrated with IBM's Watson Assistant to implement the chatbot.

Challenges we ran in

We faced challenges in integrating zing charts and open street map. We also had difficulty implementing storage support for the community feature. We wanted to integrate with NLP but were unable to do so due to timing constraints.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud to have built an app to take a stand against a pervasive social phenomenon. We gathered and presented data in a way that allows users to empathize with women and for providing a hub for a sorority of women. We are also thrilled that we made a useful app that not only raises awareness but also provides actionable resources for women.

What we learned

We learned about the status of women in each state in India and how to use ZingCharts Api and Openstreetmap API. We learned how to use local storage to save and retrieve information.

What's next for Stree

We would like to expand the community feature to add NLP to filter hate speech in the community forum.
