Inspiration

Rwanda loses $1.7 billion annually —12% of its GDP— due to air pollution-related costs. Farmers struggle with unpredictable weather patterns, industries face **sustainability compliance challenges, and the government lacks **granular environmental data for policymaking.

We were inspired to create Stratos, a smart environmental monitoring system, to address these pressing issues. Our goal was to develop an **affordable, real-time IoT solution that empowers farmers, industries, and governments with data-driven insights to drive sustainability.

With only four days in this hackathon, we set out to build a system that could:

  • Enable farmers to optimize yields and reduce losses.
  • Help industries meet environmental regulations and improve sustainability.
  • Provide governments with actionable data for climate action and public health policies.

By integrating IoT sensors, AI analytics, and solar-powered hardware, we built a **scalable, impactful solution designed for Rwanda’s unique environmental challenges.

What it does

Stratos tracks CO, CO₂, NH₃, temperature, and humidity using smart sensors. It helps:

  • Farmers predict weather changes and protect crops.
  • Industries monitor emissions for compliance.
  • Governments access real-time air quality data.

How we built it

We rapidly prototyped Stratos using:

  • IoT sensors for environmental data collection.
  • AI-driven analytics for insights and predictions.
  • Cloud-based dashboards for real-time visualization.
  • Solar-powered hardware for off-grid use.

Challenges we ran into

  • Limited time to refine sensor calibration.
  • Data accuracy adjustments for local conditions.
  • UI/UX optimization for better user experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a working prototype in just four days.
  • Implemented real-time data processing.
  • Designed a multi-language dashboard.

What we learned

  • Rapid prototyping requires agile teamwork.
  • IoT + AI can drive sustainability solutions.
  • User-friendly design ensures broader adoption.

What's next for Stratos

  • Refining sensor accuracy for field deployment.
  • Expanding to more environmental metrics.
  • Partnering with local organizations for scale.
