Inspiration

Many students face a common challenge in university life: While surrounded by peers, students often struggle to form lasting friendships and build genuine confidence. Our research discovered that students frequently feel isolated despite being in a crowded campus environment. They yearn to learn interesting skills but don't know where to start or feel intimidated by traditional learning platforms. Moreover, many students undervalue their talents, unaware that their unique skills—whether in digital art, coding, or even tea ceremony—could be valuable to others.

What We Learned

Research shows friendship instability and lack of social connections can significantly impact academic performance and psychological well-being. We also discovered that peer-to-peer learning creates deeper, more meaningful connections than traditional social platforms, as relationships are built on mutual growth and shared interests.

How We Built It

We developed Sprout using a combination of modern technologies and thoughtful design principles:

Technical Stack

  • Frontend: Next JS for responsive design
  • Backend: Firebase
  • Database: Firebase

Core Features

  • Skill Trees: Visual progress tracking
  • Direct Chat: Real-time communication
  • Collaborative Projects: Team-based learning
  • Achievement System: Recognition for both teaching and learning

Challenges We Faced

Team Collaboration The initial challenge in deciding our final project direction as a team Needed time to align everyone's vision and reach agreement on core features

Design Process Creating high-fidelity prototypes within the tight hackathon timeline was demanding. Coordinating design standards between team members while maintaining consistency

Technical Limitations Some planned interactive features proved too complex for the hackathon timeframe. Had to simplify certain features while preserving the core user experience

Through these challenges, we learned that building a successful skill-sharing platform requires more than just technical expertise – it needs a deep understanding of human connection, community dynamics, and also team collaboration. Our solution aims to transform how students connect and learn, making university life more enjoyable through meaningful skill exchange and friendship formation.
