Inspiration

Our oceans are vital for food, livelihood, and the environment, but pollution and illegal fishing are threatening their future. Growing up near the coast, I saw fishermen struggle to find safe and productive fishing areas while facing the dangers of polluted waters. This inspired me to create a smart system that helps protect our oceans and supports sustainable fishing.

What it does

The Smart Ocean Monitoring System uses a single sensor to detect ocean pollution and environmental factors like sea surface temperature and chlorophyll levels, which help identify fish population areas. It sends real-time alerts to fishermen about the best fishing zones and warns authorities about pollution and illegal fishing activities. The system makes it easier to protect marine life and improve fishing safety.

How we built it

We designed and built a sensor setup capable of gathering critical ocean data in real-time. Using Flutter, we developed a mobile app that connects to the sensor data, providing users with clear, easy-to-understand information and alerts. The app works without requiring users to log in, ensuring quick access to important updates even in remote areas.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge was developing an affordable yet accurate sensor that could replace complex multi-sensor systems. Another difficulty was handling limited internet connectivity in coastal regions to ensure timely alerts. Designing a simple, user-friendly app interface for fishermen with varying levels of technology familiarity also required careful attention and testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built a functional prototype that integrates sensor data with a mobile app, providing reliable pollution detection and fishing zone alerts. The system has the potential to support sustainable fishing, reduce environmental harm, and improve safety for coastal communities. Our work has opened opportunities to partner with local authorities and NGOs for greater impact.

What we learned

We learned how to integrate environmental sensor data with mobile technology effectively. We improved our skills in Flutter app development, data analysis, and designing for users with limited technical backgrounds. Most importantly, we discovered the power of technology to solve real-world environmental challenges and empower communities.

What's next for Smart Ocean Monitoring System

Next, we plan to expand sensor coverage to gather more detailed ocean data and improve alert accuracy. We want to add new features to the app, such as weather forecasts and fishing recommendations. We also aim to collaborate with government agencies and environmental groups to scale the system and make a larger impact on ocean conservation and sustainable fishing.
