Inspiration:
Parents often struggle to balance busy schedules with ensuring their children’s safe commute to school. Since students can’t carry phones and parents can’t fully rely on drivers, we wanted to create a transparent, reliable, and safe transport monitoring solution.
What it does:
- Tracks school buses in real time using GPS-enabled devices. 2.Sends notifications when the bus reaches pickup/drop points.
- Alerts parents and schools if the bus deviates from its route.
- Provides dashboards for both parents and school administrators.
- Adds a layer of trust and accountability to student transport.
How we built it:
- Hardware: GPS-enabled IoT device installed in buses.
- Backend: Cloud server to process and store location data.
- Frontend: Parent Mobile App (Android/iOS) with live maps and alerts. Admin Web Dashboard for route management and oversight. APIs: Google Maps/OpenStreetMap for route visualization. Communication: Push notifications + SMS fallback for critical alerts.
Challenges we ran into:
- Normalizing GPS data into a parent-friendly app interface.
- Ensuring reliable connectivity in areas with weak mobile networks.
- Data privacy and security for sensitive student commute details.
- Keeping the app lightweight but still feature-rich.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
- Building a fully functional prototype within limited time.
- Successfully integrating real-time GPS with mobile notifications.
- Designing a clean and intuitive UI for parents.
- Creating a system that schools can actually adopt in practice.
What we learned:
- Hands-on experience with IoT + cloud integration.
- The importance of user-centric design for busy parents.
- Strategies for scalable and secure data handling.
- How to pitch a project to both technical and non-technical audiences.
What's next for Smart Bus Tracking & Safety System:
- Add biometric/facial recognition for student attendance.
- Predict arrival times with AI traffic analysis.
- Emergency SOS button for students/drivers.
- Integration with wearables for younger children.
- Partnerships with schools to run real-world pilots.
