Inspiration

Our inspiration behind this project was the challenges that we faced in this designathon, not the actual design process but the logistics of gathering our team on time. Punctuality was not the only issue but the communication required to maintain team unity. While this wasn't a major disruption to our experience our designathon, when putting our heads together about what unwritten rule we wanted to address, we decided to tell our own story - and many others.

What it does

SlowPoke is a real-time coordination app for group meet-ups that replaces a single guessed meeting time with temporary shared visibility of where everyone actually is. When a group agrees to meet at a specific time and place, SlowPoke shows every attendee’s live location, ETA, and mode of travel on one shared map for that hangout, and lets attendees send a low-effort ‘poke’ when someone needs to pick up the pace.

How we built it

After fleshing out all the features and the general look and feel of the experience through developing a visual identity, our Team worked on illustrator, Figma and Canva to develop a working digital experience. The final prototype we created was designed and prototyped on the software Figma, using AI and technology to better assist us throughout this process.

Challenges we ran into

The major two challenges were the competitors we had in the same industry of live location tracking products and services, which were Life360 and Find My. The second major issue we came across was designing something that was appealing enough to beat our competitors, as well as something that encourages those who struggle to be punctual.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were mostly proud of the final product we developed in the short time we had together, as well as the steps we took along the way. Being able to work in a group dynamic under the pressures of time and stress, as well as networking with Mentors and other peers was one of the greatest steps we took along the way as a team.

What we learned

We learnt that what makes a designed product and service appealing is not the originality of it, rather the innovation and the unique experience it can bring. While we initially struggled with understanding how to navigate such great competitors that provided the same service, we realised that our product was different because of the voice our SlowPoke had. Rather than the service, it was the new look and feel that consumers would be appealed by, which was what we worked towards the most.

What's next for SlowPoke

Hopefully we can continue working to greater improve the app and prototype! Potentially even working towards making it a real life service.
