Inspiration
There are 8 billion people in this world that suffer from some type of mental problem. That's 1 person for every 8 people you see walking past you everyday. You cannot truly understand how someone feels but you can try to help them. Even a little nudge in the right direction can shape someone's life.
What it does
In the home page, there's a quote of the day. Quotes are just words, yet to the right people, they can be extremely meaningful. To the right person, that quote might be the future direction of their life. Beyond the quotes, for those who need help, it's there for you. If you need to talk to someone, multiple crisis help lines are present. There's also a therapy search up that, given a location, can find the nearest therapists in case you seek help that way. We also have a gallery section consisted of AI generated images created from the feelings of those who used it. Perhaps witnessing someone else's happiness will pave way for your own as well.
Why?
The generated images are saved and lets the user come back and review on past happiness that can allow them to reminisce with their current selves and be happy again. The therapist finders can help the user know that help is always around the corner if they need it. The daily quotes can mean a lot to anyone, even a couple positive words can change a persons outlook on life.
How we built it
Collaborating using GitHub and Git, we each worked on different parts of the project, some on the frontend, some on the backend, and swapping here and there. We used multiple APIs, one for quotes, one to find the location of the nearest therapies, and one to generate an image.
Challenges we ran into
There were lots of challenges we faced. The biggest one being coming up with an idea for this hackathon. We wanted to help address mental health challenges for people around the globe, but couldn't come up with an idea. After brainstorming, we focused on thinking of what was readily available. That being personal happiness trackers in the form of images and plenty of useful information. We struggled with time constraints and connecting therapist locations and AI-Generated images to frontend pages in a dynamically visually appealing manner. But we still powered through and did not give up. As for personal challenges, towards the start of the hackathon. It was Thanksgiving and most of us celebrating it, were busy eating turkeys. Believe it or not, it wasn't until the 2nd day of the Hackathon did we come up with a solid plan for going about our mental help website. Then again, here we are, still pushing out results.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One thing we were proud of is how we were able to build a full web based application in a few days. The long hours spent in a voice call, only leaving to eat and sleep, was another accomplishment. There's also how the website we built might help someone struggling out there, and that our support is available to anyone out there.
What we learned
From APIs, databases, and GitHub for collaboration, we each left with knowledge we didn't know before this. We each had expertise in different fields and by the end of it, we all learned and built on each other's weaknesses and strengths.
What's next for Sky High
Sky High currently does not possess the ability to share galleries with others, but in the future, this will be the key for connecting others worldwide and spreading happiness! Until then, people around the world can enjoy the therapy search ups, quotes, and to view images or previously generated images to brighten their day.
