Inspiration

What inspired us was the will to make things easier for our community regarding period products and menstrual care. As an all-woman group, this issue is close to our hearts, and we wanted to utilize our skills to make an impact. We understand the topic holds a lot of stigma and hoped to create an app that would conserve the privacy of its users by providing quick, reliable information in a time of need.

What it does

Allows you to see your nearest free public restroom with period products, either available or not available in the case of emergency, or for those without a bathroom or menstrual products, like our homeless population. This ensures we maintain the hygiene of our female population regardless of their living conditions. First, you open the app and select the general area where you are located. After that, a list of all facilities in the area will show up, for which you can click on each one and see its menstrual products, hours, and more. The map on the right is for assistance in locating where these restrooms are compared to where you are.

How we built it

We used our knowledge of Java applications to create an app that could select where you were in San Jose to see information about every facility that supposedly had free restrooms with free menstrual products.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge our group ran into was really narrowing down the app's facilities. We had many ideas, and ultimately had to pick and choose the best ones to integrate, causing a few pivots throughout our process. Another challenge was how to integrate a map in our application.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to integrate a map into our application, allowing users to see better where public restrooms are located with free menstrual products.

What we learned

We learned how to incorporate a map into a Java application and how the general user interface of Java applications works.

What's next for SJLunaria

Moving forward we'd like to collaborate with the city to offer more accurate information about period product locations, and add others like women's shelters. We'd also like to implement a feature where users can report real time information about these locations, and also add an option to select other languages.
