Inspiration

During the COVID-19 pandemic, unemployment rates peaked at 14.8%. Employees were laid off, new job offers rescinded, and job search became the most difficult task for recent graduates.

As the economy recovers from the pandemic, firms and employers are facing a shifting paradigm in workforce demand, and they require a reliable method of fulfilling changing human capital needs. There is too much noise in the job market — for both employers and applicants.

According to Glassdoor, corporate job openings attract 250 resumes. Out of these 250 candidates, only 4-6 will be interviewed, and only 1 will get a job offer.

For employers, it is costly and time-consuming to manually review resumes, conduct phone screenings, carry out behavioral interviews, and conduct technical interviews.

For applicants, it is just as time-consuming to find a job.

With this unfulfilled need in mind, we have developed a desktop web platform that simplifies the hiring process for both employers and applicants.

What it does

Simply is a web platform that automates the hiring and job search process by using data from:

  • Standardized assessments
  • Projects
  • Personality surveys

Each step of our 3-phase process generates metrics that filter the applicants with an end goal of providing the ideal candidate to the employer. And of course, it also simplifies job searches for applicants by automatically matching them up with employers.

How we built it

We first used graphics and notes to brainstorm and conceptualize our project. We then proceeded to build Simply with Bubble.io. Since Bubble's workflow is similar to finite state machines I created UML diagrams as a mock-up for our workflow. We used SQLite on Bubble which was deployed on AWS along with all the images used on the project.

Challenges we ran into

We faced SQLite usage had its limits on bubble and we had to use non-convention methods to satisfy the pie and radar chart. While creating the project we had a tough time creating mock-up data and that's where we used an extension API for faker-js. Unlike a traditional programming language, there were no data structures to work with so we had to figure a way around it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We spent a long time figuring out the design of Simply while trying to work with Bubble's graphical plugins. We literally had to think outside of the box for the graphical plugins to work with SQLite. We thought that the idea Simply was also well designed and could help the post-pandemic job market.

What we learned

During this project, we honed our ability to use the various functions of Bubble.io to build a functioning prototype. We also improved our abilities to collaborate efficiently and effectively.

What's next for Simply

Our next steps are to find a method to web-scrap questions to use within Simply and add a project history. We already have a project submission page but were unable to demo it due to the demo's time constraint. In the near future, we hope to expand the target audience to the entire job market instead of being programmer-centric.
