Signal Desk: an accountable incident handoff for small teams

Problem and intended users

Small software teams may have a support inbox and error monitoring but no dedicated reliability team. A customer report, an engineer's technical evidence and a founder's response can become separate conversations without a clear owner or completion check. Signal Desk addresses that handoff. This is a problem hypothesis; no customer research, market-size figure or measured time saving is claimed.

Proposed service

Signal Desk combines a lightweight operating service with an evidence packet. Support records the affected workflow. An engineer prepares redacted technical observations using the existing Mantis tooling. A named owner approves a fix, rollback or escalation. The team verifies recovery and produces a customer-safe update. Incomplete evidence remains explicitly unresolved.

Innovation and alternatives

The proposal focuses on ownership and handoff quality between support, engineering and the customer-facing owner. It complements monitoring and helpdesk products, rather than trying to replace them. The new contribution is the service blueprint, decision gates, testable operating model and pilot design around that boundary.

Business model and feasibility

A hypothetical $49/team/month self-service tier and optional paid onboarding are starting points for customer discovery. Hosting, acquisition, implementation and support costs must be measured before making profitability claims. The interactive capacity model exposes incident count, handling time, hourly staff cost, assumed improvement and price. It distinguishes reclaimed staff capacity from actual cash savings and handles zero-incident scenarios without inventing a break-even result.

Implementation and validation plan

A four-week pilot would recruit three willing teams: observe their current process with consent, run a manual handoff, compare matched incident categories, and review usefulness and willingness to pay. Resources needed include one service designer, one engineer, team-owner time and a secure workspace. Measures include time to assign an owner, handoff completeness, reopen rate and handling time by category. A small pilot would not establish causal impact.

Risks and limitations

Potential failure modes include added bureaucracy, sensitive evidence exposure, incomplete traces and expensive onboarding. Human review remains mandatory before sharing evidence or changing production. Stop or redesign if the process increases work, leaks information, or fails to provide clear value. The presentation collects no real incident or customer data.

Prior work and new Graphiques materials

This entry builds on my existing Mantis project. Mantis Field Kit is a separately disclosed prior VoltHacks entry. Original source history and MIT attribution are preserved. Signal Desk's service blueprint, pilot, business assumptions, interactive capacity calculator, tests and presentation were created September 11, 2026 for Graphiques. The subscription service and pilot are proposed; the presentation, calculator and JSON export work today.

Tools and checks

OpenAI Codex assisted with concept presentation, code and documentation. HTML, CSS and JavaScript implement the presentation without a backend. Three calculation tests pass, including zero and invalid inputs; browser checks verified rendering, recalculation, JSON export and the mobile layout. There is no claim of completed customer interviews, an operating subscription business or guaranteed savings.
