Inspiration

We wanted to create something that empowers communities to stay informed about local health trends. Inspired by the idea of a crowdsourced early illness detection network, we built SickSense—a platform where users can anonymously log symptoms, allowing AI to predict and warn about potential outbreaks. Our goal was to provide a safe space where people could track their health, get insights, and feel supported.

What it does

How we built it

We developed SickSense using JavaScript and used GitHub for version control, VS Code as our main development environment, and explored various APIs for location tracking and health insights. Our approach included:

  • Hybrid Community Selection: Users can select a community via GPS, search manually, or save favorite locations.

  • Symptom Tracking & AI Insights: An interactive check-in process where users report symptoms, get personalized wellness suggestions, and see community health trends.

Challenges we ran into

  • We explored various APIs for location services and symptom tracking but had to pivot multiple times due to limitations.

  • Implementing seamless navigation between pages while maintaining state persistence was tricky

  • Ensuring user data was stored properly without requiring accounts or logins for anonymity

  • Creating an AI response that felt natural and supportive rather than clinical or intimidating

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully building a functional prototype within the hackathon timeframe.

  • Implementing an intuitive symptom check-in process that provides AI-driven health suggestions.

  • Designing a community-powered illness detection system that emphasizes privacy and ease of use.

  • Creating a user-friendly website that makes tracking health trends accessible to all.

What we learned

  • The importance of user experience (UX) in health-related applications

  • How to effectively manage state and routing in React

  • The complexities of integrating APIs and handling local data storage

  • How to collaborate efficiently in a time-constrained environment

What's next for SickSense

  • Implement our design into the website to refine UI/UX

  • Develop a dashboard with actionable insights for users

  • Ensure long-term scalability by optimizing data storage and processing for every city/community
