Inspiration
We are aware that the gender pay gap in our society is still very much present. That is why we decided to inspire ourselves from Rate My Professor as well as Glassdoor. We believe our website will allow us to help women fight against discrimination in the work environment.
What it does
Our website allows women to understand every nook and cranny of a specific company allowing them to render a final judgment of whether the company is worth of their time and effort. This is done by aggregating mass user reviews and displaying them in a friendly way for our users to quickly understand what is going on at a specific location.
How we built it
We settle on a LAMP stack as with our computer knowledge this was the easiest way to proceed with. We used multiple api's such as OpenStreetMap to display our maps, Nominatim api to autocomplete the addresses and MyMemory api to translate the reviews into the wanted language.
Challenges we ran into
Our team was heavily lacking experience with computer which slowed us down by a large amount. On top of this we ran into the issue of sleep deprivation. As the night went on our critical thinking was degraded which made simple solutions become one of the hardest to implement along with multiple edge cases being ignored. We also ran into issue with such large scale implementation of a database as a simple database query could turn into 6+ lines of raw SQL statements.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of having been able to implement most of the features we wanted.
What we learned
We learned how to cooperate in a team as well as furthering our programming skills by forcing us to get our hands deep into mud with the aspect of coding we disliked the most such as dealing with multiple possible edge cases as well as API's we had previously never used and had to sync with our database. We also learned that resting would be a great idea with a simple 30 minutes power nap that could greatly improve our concentration during the next hours.
What's next for SheWork$
We wished to aggregate data from other rating websites such as Glassdoor as well as polishing some more edgecases such as special characters appearing as their unicode code. We would also like to add a forum allowing women to discuss in between each other of the potential upsides and downsides of working at a certain company.
