Inspiration
The project was inspired by the growing issue of food waste alongside food insecurity in many communities. Witnessing surplus food from restaurants and households go to waste while many individuals struggled to access meals motivated me to design a solution that connects those who can share with those in need.
What it does
Share & Care is a platform designed to connect individuals and organizations with surplus food to charities and community groups in need. It facilitates seamless food donation and collection by providing: Simple Donation Process: Users can easily list surplus food, including details like quantity, type, and pickup location. Real-Time Matching: The platform matches donors with nearby charities or individuals who need the food, ensuring minimal wastage. Pickup Scheduling: Donors and charities can coordinate pickup times directly through the app, streamlining the process. Transparency & Impact Tracking: Donors can track the status of their donations and see how their contributions make a difference.
How we built it
- Research and Ideation Conducted user interviews with donors, charities, and food banks to understand their pain points and needs. Performed a competitive analysis of existing donation platforms to identify gaps and opportunities. Created user personas and journey maps to define target users and their interactions with the platform.
- Design Process Developed low-fidelity wireframes to map the core functionalities, focusing on simplicity and accessibility. Created high-fidelity prototypes in Figma, ensuring the interface was intuitive for both donors and charities. Designed the interface with a focus on inclusivity, using clear navigation, large touch targets, and multilingual support.
- Features Development Donation Listings: Enabled users to add food details, photos, and availability. Real-Time Notifications: Integrated push notifications for donors and charities to stay updated on donation status. Scheduling System: Designed a calendar-based feature for pickup time coordination. Impact Metrics Dashboard: Designed visual dashboards to showcase donation history and its impact.
- Testing and Iteration Conducted user testing sessions to identify pain points and refine the design. Iterated based on feedback, improving navigation, clarity of information, and flow efficiency.
- Collaboration Tools Used Figma and Miro for design and brainstorming. ## Challenges we ran into One major challenge was designing an interface that equally served two distinct user groups: donors and charities. Each group had unique priorities and constraints, requiring careful consideration of their workflows. Additionally, ensuring clear communication of the app's value proposition was another hurdle, which I addressed through intuitive onboarding flows and visual cues. ## What we learned Throughout this project, I learned the importance of empathy-driven design. Engaging with charities, donors, and recipients gave me insights into their unique needs and constraints. I also gained valuable experience in creating user flows that cater to diverse demographics, balancing simplicity for donors and reliability for charities.
What's next for Share & Care
Launch and User Adoption Roll out the platform in a pilot city to gather real-world feedback. Partner with local charities, food banks, and restaurants to build a reliable donor network. Run awareness campaigns to educate communities about the platform and its benefits. Enhancing Features Multilingual Support: Expand language options to make the app accessible to diverse communities. Geolocation Optimization: Integrate advanced geolocation to improve real-time matching and route optimization for pickups. Donor Incentives: Introduce features like impact badges and tax receipt generation to encourage donations. Scaling Partnerships Collaborate with grocery stores, restaurants, and meal delivery services to expand the network of surplus food sources. Work with non-profits and government agencies to integrate the app into broader food insecurity initiatives. Advanced Analytics and Insights Develop dashboards for charities to analyze donation trends and predict future needs. Offer data-driven insights to donors on their contribution impact.
