I built ShadeSignal because I thought it would be useful to find places to cool down when it's really hot outside.
The app shows shaded places, drinking-water refill spots, and cool indoor spaces on a map. You can filter resources, view their details, switch to a list, add observations, update information, and report details that might be outdated.
One thing I wanted to focus on was honesty. A place being listed doesn't mean it's definitely open, safe, or has water available. That's why the app shows whether information is recently verified, potentially stale, or unverified. Sample places are also clearly labelled as fictional.
I built it with React, TypeScript, Vite, and Leaflet using OpenStreetMap tiles. Right now, the data is stored locally in the browser, so it doesn't sync between users or devices, and there's no real verification system yet.
Since I was balancing this project with my schoolwork, I didn't have enough time to fully polish and test everything. I'd like to keep improving it and eventually add shared data and a proper way to verify community observations.
