Inspiration

The idea for SafeRoute AI came from a simple problem that many of us face in our daily lives.

Whether it's a family member traveling at night, a student commuting to university, or someone visiting a new area, people often worry about safety.

Today, most safety-related information is spread across social media, news reports, WhatsApp groups, and personal networks. It is often incomplete, difficult to verify, or reaches people too late to be useful.

We wanted to create a platform that helps people make informed decisions before they travel, giving them better awareness of potential risks around them.

What it does

SafeRoute AI is an AI-powered community safety platform that helps people make safer travel and daily life decisions.

The platform allows users to:

  • View safety levels through a color-coded threat heat map
  • Report incidents happening in their communities
  • Explore safety information about different areas
  • Find safer routes for walking, biking, or driving
  • Ask questions through an AI-powered safety assistant

Instead of searching multiple sources for information, users can access relevant safety insights in one place.

How we built it

We designed SafeRoute AI around four key components:

Threat Heat Map

A visual map that displays area risk levels using color-coded indicators.

  • 🟡 Moderate Risk
  • 🟠 Elevated Risk
  • 🔴 High Risk

Community Reporting

Users can report incidents such as:

  • Theft
  • Harassment
  • Accidents
  • Suspicious activities
  • Road blockages
  • Other safety concerns

Safe Route Navigation

The platform compares routes and provides safer travel recommendations based on available safety information.

Users can choose between:

  • Fastest Route
  • Safest Route
  • Balanced Route

AI Safety Assistant

A conversational assistant that helps users understand local risks, routes, and community reports through natural language questions.

Examples:

Is it safe to travel here tonight?

Which route is safer?

What incidents have been reported nearby?

The project combines mapping technology, AI-powered analysis, community-generated information, and location intelligence to create a simple and user-friendly experience.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was making the project more than just another crime mapping application.

Initially, the idea focused mainly on displaying incidents on a map. As we continued developing the concept, we realized that people need more than information — they need guidance and actionable insights.

Another challenge was finding ways to present complex safety information in a simple format that anyone could understand and use quickly.

We also had to think carefully about how community reports, route recommendations, and AI-generated insights could work together in a meaningful way.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of turning a simple safety awareness idea into a more complete civic technology solution.

Some of our key accomplishments include:

  • Creating a community-driven approach to safety awareness

  • Integrating an AI assistant focused specifically on safety-related questions

What we learned

This project taught us that technology becomes most valuable when it solves real everyday problems.

We learned that AI can do much more than generate answers. It can help people understand risks, identify patterns, and make informed decisions.

We also learned the importance of community participation and how local knowledge can contribute to creating safer and more informed communities.

Finally, we learned that successful civic technology should be simple, practical, and focused on the people who will use it.

Our vision is to continue developing SafeRoute AI into a larger community safety platform.
