Inspiration Safe Walk was inspired by the simple idea that not all streets feel the same at night. Some areas feel bright and comfortable, while others feel dark or unsafe, and we wanted to build something that helps people choose routes that feel better, not just faster.
What it does Safe Walk shows users which paths are brighter and suggests a safer route for walking at night. It gives a quick visual sense of which streets are well‑lit so people can avoid darker areas.
How we built it We designed a clean, simple interface and mapped out walkable areas with brightness information. From there, we built a routing system that prioritizes safer, better‑lit paths while keeping the app lightweight and easy to use.
Challenges we ran into Our biggest challenge was fixing UI bugs under time pressure. Animations weren’t syncing, elements were misaligned, and small layout issues kept breaking the flow. Getting everything to look smooth and consistent took way more time than expected.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We’re proud that everything finally came together. The UI feels clean, the animations work, and the app actually looks and behaves the way we imagined. Seeing it all run smoothly was a huge moment for us.
What we learned We learned how much polish matters, especially when it comes to UI. Even small bugs can completely change how an app feels, and fixing them taught us a lot about layout, timing, and user experience.
What's next for Safe Walk Next, we want to improve the accuracy of brightness data, expand coverage, and add more features that help people feel safer walking at night. We also want to refine the UI even more and explore community‑driven safety insights.
