Inspiration

"By one estimate, more than 9 percent of Miami residents suffer from a mental illness -- a rate that is approximately three times higher than the national average." (Governing, 2015) Mental health is an important issue, and lately because of global problems, teens have been exposed to different disorders that affect their daily life and their growth. Nowadays is normal to find students struggling with anxiety, depression, and many more issues that it's important to work on. Safe Space borns with the idea of providing teens useful resources in a way that actually helps and makes them feel safe.

## What it does Safe Space is a website design by teens for teens where you can find resources about mental health and taking care of yourself. In it you will find a motivational quote generator (for those moments where you need a little bit of good vibes), movie recommendations, a calming playlist, stadistics about Miami mental health issues, a live chat that will connect you with a professional and a fun virtual pet game that will show you ideas of self care and things you can do to improve your physical and mental health.

How we built it

We divided our website in different parts, so everyone can focus on one task at the time. The first team we did was creating a nice logo and design for our website using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, then we start building all the features of the web page. Everything was built with html, Javascript and CSS. The video game was made in Code.org platform, and all the characters were design in Adobe Illustrator.

Challenges we ran into

While building the game we ran to many challenges, especially when trying to make it look cute but also make it work, however with the help of our team and mentors we figured it out.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of all the features we add to the website, making it interactive, while following a space theme and most importantly, creating a safe space for teens in this crazy world.

What we learned

Our team was really diverse, so everyone learned something new from each other. The use of Javascript and CSS to make everything functional and pretty was one of our main learnings, and something important that will help us in next projects

What's next for Safe Space

We want to keep working on each feature so it can be more attractive for the public and also make them want to spend more time in our website.
