Inspiration

As undergrad students, we find ourselves listening to music all the time whether we are studying, hanging out with friends, or relaxing alone. As frequent music listeners, it's come to our attention that women have historically been underrepresented in the music industry - whether it's lack of credit in their songwriting or gender-based objectification and harassment. We created an online blog that allows its reader to discover new women-centric music emphasizing women's experiences, perspectives, and stories. Our goal is to celebrate the artistry of women as talented producers, songwriters, singers, and musicians. As computer science students, this project is important to us because we want our work to have a positive impact on future generations and the world around us.

What it does

RoseTunes' landing page introduces our team and the inspiration behind this blog-style site which promotes women empowerment and musical talent. We highlight influential singers on our “top female artists” page and feature tracks with inspiring lyricism or beats on our “empowerment” page. Readers can discover up-and-coming female artists in our “hidden gems” page.

How we built it

We built a website using HTML and CSS. Designs were implemented using Adobe Illustrator.

Challenges we ran into

All members in our team had no background in front-end development so we ran into some struggles while learning HTML and CSS. We attempted to incorporate Spotify's API for developers but eventually had to forgo it because we had trouble with authorization and access tokens. We managed to get as far as successfully connecting user through a client ID.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team is most proud of learning new skills from scratch and being able to apply them within 24 hours of coding. Although there were many learning obstacles, we worked

What we learned

We realized at this point in development that there was no need for the Spotify API since we were not going to be accessing the user's Spotify personal profiles or databases.

What's next for RoseTunes

Our future goals include transforming this online platform into a more interactive community by allowing readers to create user profiles. By doing so, they would be able to recommend and discuss new music with each other in a discussion section.
