Inspiration
We wanted to explore the media of sports, and were influenced by the concept of Blaseball, an interactive, procedurally generated simulation web game. We wanted to create an experience that allowed for community interaction with a unique spin. Drawing on our experience from last year's Tigerhacks, Out of ContROLL, we decided to stretch the possibilities of office chair racing into a competitive sports league setting.
What it does
Users get to spectate a fictitious race of their favorite office chair racing champions in real time.
How we built it
We used Vue as our JavaScript framework, as well as Vite, to make our web project. We used GoDaddy to get a domain name and used MongoDB and MongoDB functions to store our randomly generated simulations so that all users can view the same race. We used MongoDB to simulate the details of every race, factoring in all kinds of different stats for each player. Every racer's performance is dependent on everything from chair scooting ability, stamina, and the size of their water bottle. Watch them race, and then stop or slow down when they crash into each other or obstacles.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a lot of problems trying to get MongoDB to work. This was our first time using MongoDB and its associated tools, which made reading and writing from a database difficult. We also had trouble getting the CSS/HTML stuff to display what we envisioned, as it was first time some members had worked with these languages firsthand.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
After many drawbacks, we are excited that we managed to create something presentable and functional. We are also proud of our success in using new technologies to create a project from scratch.
What we learned
We learned a lot about web development, MongoDB, databases, and vector graphics throughout this process, and how to manage and connect many different pieces of a project into one final product.
What's next for Roll With Us
We would like to make the project more polished, as well as add new functions that allow for more hands-on player interaction, a consistent storyline, and a stronger connection between the game that inspired us and this project.
