Inspiration

We brainstormed for a few hours, coming up with different ideas of transportation, different places we could go, and different motivations for being there. In the end, we were inspired by the chairs we were sitting on, to create a unique spin on the concept of transportation.

What it does

Our project is a racing game, but with office chairs. With controls of kicking and scooting, the player is tasked with racing AI players across 5 exciting levels.

How we built it

We made our game with Unity. Additionally, some visual assets were made using Blender. Sound effects were created using actual office chairs, as well as using Audacity and SoundTrap.

Challenges we ran into

Our team in general was pretty inexperienced. We know we wanted to make a game, but we did not really know where to begin. Our idea would be best created in 3D, so we scrapped our initial plans to use C++, and made a switch to Unity. We had to learn Unity pretty much from scratch. Unity made version control very difficult for our team, so much of the hackathon was spent dealing with these issues and also learning how to use Unity.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're very excited that we managed to make a game at all, coming in with very little experience. We learned how to make good-looking levels, how to rig and animate characters in blender, and how to piece everything together in a final product.

What we learned

We learned a lot making this game. As a team, we learned many aspects of making a game in Unity, such as designing levels, adding new mechanics, handling animations and graphics, creating an AI pathfinder, making game menus, and how to build a final project. We also got experience using Blender for creating models and animating them. We learned more about GitHub through using it as our version control system. Finally, we got some experience with Audacity as we took the raw audio we made for sound effects and turned these into the final product.

What's next for Out of ContROLL

We have a lot of ideas for taking this game further. We wanted to create a story to the game, but in the end ran out of time. This story would see the player start office chair racing as a fun game between co-workers, and would see it expand into an international racing league. Some mechanics of this version got developed, such as the upgrades feature, which would be updated to better tie into the storyline.
